Tricky T-Day

Momma is trying to teach us a new trick. I cannot figure out what it is she wants us to do, but maybe if you watch the movie you can offer some suggestions.

I am supposed to tell you that we actually each worked much longer, but the movie is just the highlights.

Personally, I thought PeeWee spent way too long inside working and hearing clicks and getting treats.... for what? Did you hear me yelling him to hurry up at the end?

Oh yeah, and check out my slobbers on the dork's hiney. Hehehe.

What do you think of my raised bed?

Mango Man! Oh yeah!

OMD Mango, don't do it! She is going to send you and pee wee away somewhere in that box! Are you being pawed forward or something? Oh dear! Your best hope is that the postage will be too expensive to send you and only pee wee will get sent.
I like how you sudsed up his bottom to make it easier for him to fit in the box... very clever!
p.s. momma is giggling at how tiny pee wee looks after watching you in that video...

What is with people and their cardboard boxes? We have tried that silly game too. But hey, if I can get treats for doing something as simple as putting my head in a box repeatedly, I can do it.

Oh man Mango. You are a sexy sight for sore labbyX eyeballs. It is true that I have been super worried about my flat brother, but I am so upset that Wally told everyone I love him that I could barely sleep. I hope you don't think any less of me. Anyway, I will post an update on my blog about what's going on with him a bit later today, but we are all feeling a lot better about things since our visit to our regular vet this morning.

Awww Mango! Are you trying to have your Mango Mamma teach PeeWee to sit quietly in a box so you can tape it up & then send him to me? Is this an early holiday gift for me (& for you as well?)

& I think you might just disintegrate that card board box with all your sticky slobbers before you learn the part of actually getting INTO the box..maybe something plastic would be better for you..

Good slimer on Pee Wee cutie patootie bum bum!

Randi

So what's with the box anyway? Is your Mom planning to ship you both somewhere? You both seem to learn quite well with that clicker. Maybe Mom needs a deeper box for Mango so he has to put his head in farther.

We are very curious to find out where this box thing is headed.

Um. I'd be very worried about this whole 'get in the box' thing. Either you Mom has some Evil Plan regarding Christmas presents, or one or both of you is going to be shipped to Darkest Peru. Either way, this Cannot Be Good. I'm just sayin'.

PeeWee are you SURE you're 75 pounds? Cuz you sorta look like a little dude in that video. ((snicker, snicker)) But you are quite the attentive young man!

I seriously don't see how the 2 of you are going to fit in that box. I think your Momma wants you to Read Cycle it.

Looks like you got her trained to give you a treat just by sticking your head in the box. Good work. Maybe if you put her in a giant box you can take all the treats out of her pocket.

Gus said...

Ummm...we think if your mother wants you in the box, the first thing she needs to do is get a bigger box. NO WAY is Mango Man fitting in that box.,

Ummm, Mango you need a bigger box.

See, Gussie and us, we foxies think a like -- that's what we were going to say -- Mango Mom needs to get a bigger box if the goal is to have Mango's relentlessly hooge body get into it.

So, as others have suggested, is there s more devious plan in the works? Given previous examples of suspicioys happenings in Mango's turf, we are afraid. Very afraid.

Yep, I saw it... Mango slobber on the tiny hinney. BUTT... I was wondering if that was some of your lippy work on Merdie's head today, too???
Don't get in the box bud. You'll bet picked up by the QVC man and taken to Cats only know where.

Mango,

Looks like we all agree that you need a bigger box... but at least you got plenty of treats!

Looks like you gave Dexter a little bath there; hope you got a treat for that too!

Ok...I think I figured it out...I think you were teachin' ur mom to click the clicker...every time u or Peewee touched that stoopid box she GOT to click the clicker and give u a treat...it's called stimulus response...why in the world she likes to feed you and get her hand all drooly is beyond me, but that is the booty of OPERANT CONDITIONING...it doesn't matter how gross or stoopid it is, you get some kinda joy outta the reward which was her seein' ya touch that stoopid box.

I dunno Mango...the whole thing smelled a little weird to me...

I think Mango Mom had an abundance of treats and wanted a fast way to get rid of them. So, face in the box, treat . . .foot in the box, treat, this could go on for hours!

Have fun you treatsome guys!

Stella

Hey Mango - my human's just left a huge long comment (well, you know her!) on your YouTube video so I won't let her repeat it here but I just wanted to say - "Way to go!" -I think you're doing REALLY well and your human too - (Hsin-Yi: she is really patient and good about clicking baby steps - a lot of humans just try to only click for the final action and so we dogs get bored and lose interest when we don't get the click for a long time...it's much easier to "shape" the final behaviour from small baby steps along the way. Great pactice for timing too! )AAAAaaaarrrrggghh! I just said I wouldn't let my human write another long comment!! :-)

I just noticed your birthday. You are 1 day short of 4 years younger than me. I like your raised bed. I always look for spots with nice cushy grass and leaves! My Patrick did not do such a great job at making "mulch", so I have leaf piles.

Great video, though I don't have any suggestions because I failed at teaching this too.

I giggled at PeeWee's labraenthusiasm. Reminds me of Marge.

What I'm trying to figgur is if your momma is trying to teach you to get in the box, how you is both gonna fit??? Even one of you looks too big to get inside!!! And Mango, how are YOU ever gonna fit? Wish I could help you out, but I think you "get" what you're sposed to do very well. I was very impressed by the work both of you did in the movie! Great job!

Wild Dingo said...

Tho I LOVE shaping behavior, sometimes its just too dang long and I prefer a lure. There's argument about lure vs. shaping (lure is like a person in a car following another car to a destination, ie, lure versus following a map with directions, ie, shapping, you will always remember how to get to that place if you do the later.) K, that said, still prefer the lure especially with dogs that take a little longer. First, I would teach the recall exercise. Once they have that down, get a BIG box, something YOU can get into as well. Get inside and recall the dog. do whatever it takes, raise their drive and lure with the treat. a big enough box so both you and dog can fit in. make it low enough that they can jump in w/o too much struggle, especially if they have trouble jumping and haven't been trained to jump (they may be freaked that you're askign them to jump into somehting) after you do that, name the behavior ("in" or "box")... step out of the box and tap inside the box and give the command with the food lure in your hand. try to "raise" drive by interacting with the dog. "come on Mango, In!" happy voice and say it a lot. It's a little different than pure shapping, as you are using body behaviors and voice to raise drive, but i find it works really well, even with my "low drive" sibe!

BTW: I call Loki a "dog in the box" cuz he's like a Macintosh, he's plug-n-play. when we had to teach our dogs to get into the box at school, all these people with pure bred german shepherds (you know smart dogs) had to get into the box and lure the dog in. I just pointed and said "in" and he jumped in. He's considered "high drive" and will just "do" something even if its a guess, based on my movements or direction of my hands. He's quite opposite of Juno my husky, BUT I've learned to transfer that kind of learning to Juno by exciting drive in her and luring her. Luring a low drive dog can be difficult to take them "off the lure" ... for example, i taught both dogs using a lure to "stand" from a sit or a down. the GSD mix (Loki) learned it in a few days and was weaned off the lure and responds by voice (i still need a hand signal tho). The husky/sibe, still needs the lure of my hand signal toward a lure (weeks later), meaning it is taking her a longer time to make the connection than my "high drive" dog.

Mango Man! Oh Yea! Tell your mom you need a Relentlessly Huge box to go with your relentlessly huge self when first learning. later on, once you learn "in" or "box" she can scale it down... shheesssh you'd think she'd know by now what HUGE needs. ;

if you were a cat, you would jump right in - no clicks, no treats needed. That proves we are smarter than cats.
Work it.

Martha and Bailey said...

Mango, we watched the video and liked that you and Dexter got lots of treats!
We do not think you should get in the box!
We had a box like that came in the mail - if you get in your mum might close it up and post you!
Really that box is far too small for your relentlessy huge self.
We suggest training your mom to put the box away and just concentrate on the treat part - we liked that.

Mango,

Hmmmm, I can't help but wonder why does she want you to squeeze your very large self into that relatively small box? Is she training you to be a contortionist for the circus? Is she going to make you work for a living? Rebel, Mango, rebel! Oh, and very nice work with slobbering up your brother!
