More Historic Stuff and Guard Dog Action

Due in no small part to momma's recent infatuation with the sound of her own voice, under the guise of a walkie for ME she suggested that we visit historic Saxonville located just north of our estate.

Of course she took more of those boring movies, but at least I convinced her to include more of ME in them this time. Total running time is about 10 minutes. Just ignore any comments about me being nervous. Lies! All lies!

Dexter's tour of Saxonville Part I - In which we look at the Sudbury River a lot as well as the old mill building.

Dexter's tour of Saxonville Conclusion - In which I go on a scary platform, discover an agilities park, and look at some old houses.

Momma insists I tell you that the textile industry was very big in Master Chew Sits and that they have preserved some of the mill buildings as museums in Lowell. While it did bring wealth to the area, the working conditions in the mills were, for the most part, deplorable, but it is a part of our history.

I was alert enough to suggest a few still photos for our readers who do not have the high speed Internet (or who prefer not to listen to the DOH babbling for ten minutes).

So here is a photograph of our Saxonville Mill (or at least part of it, since the mill complex covers several acres). They made mostly carpets.

The mill was powered by the Sudbury River. This big waterfall traps the water and funnels it into fast moving canals which were then used to turn the cranks on the looms.

Now the mill building is home to a bunch of small businesses, including this one which appears to have a flat guard dog (not really very intimidating if you ask me).

At one point along the river there is a platform which juts out way high. I was not afraid to go on it, but momma FREAKED every time I stooped down for a better look.

I was forced to periodically "regroup" because some DOH's cannot operate the camera, yammer away, AND give me proper attentions at the same time. Subsequently, I did pull just a tad and had to practice sitting now and then.

This looked like a great place to stop. Momma said, "oh no, Dexter, that is not for YOU." Does it say "no dogs" anywhere? I think not!

Momma and Master really wanted to move to this neighborhood, but most of the estates here have tiny yards and they thought a big yard was more important than the house upon it.

This barn is even bigger than Master's! In fact, it is some body's house now.

And the houses where the folks who worked in the mills actually lived. They are condominiums now. Look at all those chimneys! One for each room almost.

When we finally arrived back at the estate, the RH was once again acting like his usual self and doing his howling routine.

I was busy ignoring him when all of a sudden he sounded the intruder alarm. Watch this!

Dexter done!

P.S. Momma has to go back to the work place tomorrow. She said she could either spend the day doing housework and paying bills and getting everything tidied up for the week ahead, or she could enjoy one last day of vacation and be a total slug. Hmmm.... which do you think she did?

thanks for the walkies in the historic neighborhood! the river and mill area looked really cool. your picture with you poking your head under the fence made me nervous too. but you are a very brave dog, dexter. our honey puppy will not walk on those grates you were laying on. she will walk way around them, i think she thinks she will slip through the cracks...but she's not that skinny. ;o)

Oh my goodnesses, Dexter. I'm so glad your momma chose the slug one! That was so much fun to get to go on your walkies with you! And my mom and me LUVS the pictures of you and Mr. Mango.

(Psst...I know you said you weren't skeered but it's okay if you really were. I gets skeered in new places, too. Oh, and I also have a sports bra! Onliest mine is black.)

I'm sure I know how your mom spent the day! hehehe

Mom says she has never been to Saxonville but she has been to Lowell many years ago. She also remembers how all the mills used to have thrift shops where her Mom would buy pajamas and cotton knit playwear for her and her brother at fantastic prices. Those were the days.

Poor Mom, wish she had more time to be home with you. Hope your Dad is feeling better.

We have enjoyed your tours a great deal! We hope you and your mom decide to do some more sometime.

I see the RH was more than content to throw you under the German Shepard bus! I thought he was the one who still had cajones left, but yours must be bigger!

Also, I have a fashion question. Did you get your sports bra from Wiggles, Wags and Whiskers? I am SO relieved that you color coordinated today and had a red leash with your red harness! The purple leash was distracting me last time.

How picturesque (Saxonville I mean). My mom would freak out too if I did that nose-under-the-rail maneuver! Looks like a fun place to go for a walkie. Bummer about breakfast, though.

Very excellent tour! You are inspiring us to tour around here but it is not that interesting. Your intruder alert video was extremely exciting to us. We were sure that a strange dog was coming down our driveway.

The stills are great, as Mom doesn't have the time to play the videos, sometimes. If your Mom were my Mom, she'd spend the last day of vacation being a total slug. Of course, my Mom doesn't go to an office, so that gives her liberty to be a total slug a whole bunch of the time! And yeah, um, Dexter... I'd talk to your Mom about that sports bra - there are some high fashion ones out there that still support, uh, uh, what is yours supporting? ;-)

Mom loved looking at this. She loves looking at old architecture and she is really glad that you put in the stills so that she could see it!

She probably screeched a bit when you leaned over the edge of the bridge there because you like to jump into water and she didn't know if that's what you were thinking about doing! OC

YouTube is doing maintenance or something so I'll have to watch the videos later, but I enjoyed the pictures. Those condominiums are cool. They aren't ugly like some I've seen. Oh and that is soooo cool that they use the river to work the looms (or did). :)
