26 ft. of Freedom by Dexter

I know that lots of my pals have off leash adventures out in the wild, but not me. Apparently I am "unreliable." Plus momma has apoplexy if I get out of her sight so even though I know that I wouldn't wander, why risk it.

So sometimes we break out the flexi leash to enable me to run about and explore as long as I stay within 26 ft. of her. That's really not a problem for me and I rarely go all the way to the end, but I do love the feeling of being able to run ahead or lag behind or go off briefly to the side.

Recently I have been getting a special treat... walkies in the woods. We rarely walk in the woods because it can contain two things which terrify my momma;

  1. TICKS!
  2. Off leash cracker doggies
Now I have nothing against off leash dogs per say, but they should always be under voice control of their owner and they should never ever ever be allowed to approach another dog without permission. And momma has just had too many experiences with stupid owners who let their dogs run up to her and sometimes they aren't even nice dogs. Humph.

As for ticks, well, I am optimistic that now that we have had ice on the water bowls they have frozen their blood sucking back ends off and will not be interested in attaching themselves to either me or (gasp) the DOH!

But back to my fun walk. So here I am in the woods. Hooray!

I couldn't get stupid blogger to post this right, but it is a scary foot bridge over a busy road. No problem for an agile guy like me, but it did scare the DOH a bit.

Sometimes, I just like to look around and listen to all the woodland sounds (and show off how handsome I am).

Amazing what you can learn out in the woods. For example, I never knew wild animals shopped for their sleepy furniture at the mattress store. So much for that whole burrowing in the ground theory.

Then there was this bridge over the highway.

And before you know it we're headed for home.

Now I know that wasn't very many photos, but to tell you the truth, we were have been so busy just enjoying the nice fall days that the flashy beast stays hidden most of the time.

But I did make this little movie.

As for having to substitute for the torpid beast at CGC school.... BORING! I don't know how he can stand all the sitting and staying and laying about there. And why did I have to wear my goofy reflective collar inside? Some humans were just plain too lazy to remove it. I looked like a dork.

I have to sub for Mango at graduate school today as he is still on the DL. SCORE! That means graduate school and funballs school both in one day.
Hey! I don't know what is going on with that Dennis dude, but it appears it has something to do with my RH brother. Check out his blog here.

Dexter done!

P.S. You know how the RH reported that Master had a boo boo? Well apparently it was a bad reaction to his pneumonia shot. Seems it can cause you to hurt so much that you cannot move your arm. Who knew?

That looks like a great sniffy filled walk to go on.

Loved the video of you and your Mom in the woods, Dexter. We can understand the whole tick thing. With your black fur, we think it would be hard to spot them on you. That footbridge scared the heck out of our Mom, she would never make it across. Glad Mango has been diagnosed. We had no idea dogs need a pneumonia shot! Hope he is getting better each day and we get to see him in "action" soon!

Oh, Dexter! What a super great fun walk in the woods! I just luvs to go for walks in places like that. SO many new things to sniffestigate. And gosh, you and your momma are very much brave going over those bridges!

Oh, and we're with your momma on peoples just letting their dogs run up to us. I get kinda nervousy around dogs I don't know and so my mom does the best she can to protect me from owners like that but it doesn't always work and it makes her do that skeery frowny face whenever it happens.

That looks like my kind of walk, Dex! I wish I could join you. Doesn't going over that footbridge hurt your feet? It looks like it's just a little metal grid! Yikes!

Dexter, what a great walk in the woods you and your Mom had! :) You were very patient with her when she used your flexi to try and lasso a tree BOL :)

Hey Dexter!
Great walk pix. Love your brave self crossing that wooden bridge. It looks like lots of fun to me. The woods are the best and I can relate to your leash problem, cause I'm not usually allowed loose either. Something about my tendency to run off after chipmunks. The real key is to be too fast for the ticks to catch up to you! I'm really, really fast. Have fun!

We could handle walking on those boards, but not that metal grate thingy.

Walking in the woods sounds fun, Mangoo. I wish we could do some of that here in Malaysia. Unfortunately, there's no such thing here :( I'm sorry to hear about those not so well behaved doggies you have experienced.

Sorry to hear about your master too. I hope he gets better soon!

Scruffy, Lacie and Stanley's Place said... is the RH?????? And did you get to do ROTE instead of him? Oh, poor Mango...

Our old wire foxy had a flexie leash...Mumsie refooses to use it now cuz she can't with the three of us and well, she says sometimes we're not exactly friendly, well that might be all the time and that it might not be a good idea..but anyway, one cold snowy night old Sarge did his 26 feet and gave a jerk and Mumsie dropped the leash and he took off...ugleeeeeee...a neighbor heard her screeching and helped her catch him...after that she bought a velcro strap that hooked onto the plastic handle and went around her more lost foxies....

Mumsie had gum surgery yesterday and she looks and feels like someone socked her in the jaw and she said she coulda bought tons of jewelry for what she paid for new gums. Why are hoomans so odd?

Kisses, Pal and greeting to the RH.

Loveyou, Lacie

what a cool walk, and such pretty fall leaves! I don't like icky ticks either except in Cali we have cat tails - which like icky cats will still get you in trouble.

Those are some scary looking bridges. Mom says she just knows her foot would get caught in one of those openings and she would be flat on her face.

We also understand only too well about loose dogs and irresponsible owners. We used to be able to walk the trails a lot more frequently, but too many joggers with loose dogs have spoiled our fun:(

Hope the Master and RH are both doing better soon.

Dexter! That bridge! What was it, something to prevent cattle from escaping? Love your walk in the woods and I totally relate to the off-leash beasts who are not under VC. We encounter them a lot. The black and whites are not good off leash and only are when they are at a dog park or dog beach. Where everyone is crazy anyway. Give Mango a lick, you are doing good keeping up his class schedule and tell master that his shot must have gone in a muscle. Ice, baby, ice. Ann TBL

Well, RH must be pea-green with envy, what with all the woodsey-walkies and the double doses of skools that you're raking in, Dex. Abby is most admiring of your courage to race over all those bridges with HOLES in them! She would never do that. Jed probably would, but he doesn't pack enough heft to drag mama along with him and that's the only way you'd get mama on one of those bridges: brute force.

We sure hope RH is feeling better. We're anxious to hear what the special Wild West of 495 vet says next week. Of course, RH is going to have all these "guilt" points racked up, Dex, so just wait and see: Momma will be falling all over herself "making it up" to RH for all he missed while on the DL. At least you racked up the good times while the weather is nice; by the time RH is off the DL, there may be snow or freezing rain or something.

We're sorry the Master had a bad reaction to his shot, but at least he knows it got in there and is working! Maybe he can take turns putting ice packs & heating pads on his arm and your leggie, RH.

Great walk, Dexter - I think being able to go off-leash for a 'real' walk (not one of those fenced prisons!) is the BEST!!

Hey - that's very interesting about Mango's reaction to the pneumonia shot - my human had heard to reactions to vaccines but never to a pneumonia shot!
