Seizure Monster Strikes Again

Mango Momma here.

Mango had two very bad seizures today. Fortunately Master was home. He was working in the barn and heard Dexter barking in the house. Master looked out in the driveway, nobody there, but Dexter didn't stop, so Master came inside and Mango was in the grip of the seizure monster.

This means that it was a very long one for Mango. His previous seizures have been less than two minutes but this one was certainly more than five minutes.

Mango had barely gotten up from the first one when another very bad one hit.

The poor guy was quite disoriented for a long time, but Master took good care of him, gave him lots of water, and moved all the furniture out of the way while poor Mango staggered about for over half an hour, bumping into walls.

Mango is resting now and seems fine. We are going to start him on phenobarbital. I had been hoping to avoid that as up until now his seizures were relatively short and infrequent, but given the severity of today's incident and the fact that he had two, the vet thought it wise to start the medication.

I do worry about the side effects. Lethargy. Oh dear. Could Mango get any more lethargic than he already is? More worrisome is the potential for coordination problems. He already struggles to maneuver his large self around, especially on and off the deck. I will be making sure Master or I are by his side for now whenever he goes out lest he take a tumble.

While I am consumed with worry, I am so grateful that Master was home and that Pea sounded the alert. Poor little Pea was banished to the barn as soon as Master realized what was going on. It was pouring rain and he needed to be in a safe place.

Of course the advice is to continue with life as usual. I know I will get back to that but for tonight I am just going to stay close to the big guy. He is exhausted, but otherwise fine.

As usual, all good thoughts and words of wisdom are appreciated.

Oh gosh, that's so scary. I'm so sorry, poor Mango! Good job, Dex, for sounding the alert, and thank goodness Master was there. I don't have any wisdom to impart, but even in the midst of distressing news, I had to giggle internally at your "sickies" label.

Hope Mango and the whole household are able to rest and peacefully enjoy each other tonight.

OMD I am so very sorry that Mango has to go through this Again! We were so hoping that his seizures would just go away. I know they don't but we can hope.

For now we are so greatful for Dex letting Master know and for Master knowing that Dex was serious!

Tessa has her paws crossed and I will keep Mango in my thoughts and prayers.

All our best,

Don't feel badly about the phenobarbitol. When I was first diagnosed with epilepsy, my neurologist told me something I'll never forget - seizures begat seizures. IOW - the more seizures you have, the more seizures you'll have.
Getting Mango's seizure under control with medication will be important in preventing future seizures. I don't know anti-seizure meds they work the same way in dogs as they do in humans, but side effects are worst when you first start taking them. In humans, you always start at a lower dose and slowly increase to your final dose. Once you've gotten to the correct dosage and had time to adjust, the side effects decrease.

What a lousy birthday gift. Actually, animals adjust very quickly to medications and new routines, much better than people do. We'll all wishing the very best for Mango and will keep our paws crossed for him.

Mango Momma... I have now idea WHY.. but for some reason Mango's Birthday post... did NOT show up on my blog list. I am so sorry that I missed telling him Happy Birthday.

I feel just terrible that he has had another set of seizures. I know that they are very frightening. I also know that he is in a home that gives him the best possible care.
You are all in my thoughts.

Poor Mango! That seizure monster is TERRIBLE!! When Ginger started PhenoB, she did have some side effects for the first couple of weeks - mostly ataxia and some sleepiness - but she adjusted fairly quickly considering and I hear (from the Yahoo Epilepsy Group) that is fairly common. It did take a little adjusting to get the dose right and after some time we added a second medication. Have you considered adding Melatonin? It might be something that could help. Please know we're thinking of Mango and all of you - the seizure monster is so upsetting. :(

Teri and the cats of Curlz and Swirlz said...

Oh, good you had your team right there, helping you thru that! We don't know about doggies, but cats do well on phenobarb. One of our Furrydance extended family is now 12 and she's been on phenobarb for about 8 years and only has kind of 'staring' episodes instead of full blown seizures. Teri said there is a kitty who comes to the vets where she works that is also on the 'barb and is seizure free, too. Another kitty there had to be put on gabapentin instead of phenobarb, but Teri said she doesn't remember why.

Mango may be lethargic and wobbly at first but that should lessen as the days pass so by the end of a week, he should be more back to normal.

Kitties periodically get a blood test to check their phenobarb level, though Teri can't remember what their level should be...

We are purrin for ya!

Mama has big, hot tears and Gretchen is so busy worrying about her... but you're worth typing the comment myself, Mango.

Mama is flubbering something about a Mopsy from her childhood and that same monster... I don't think she has any good advice, so I'll just sling drool, Gg'll cross her paws, and Mama will have a wet face and do whatever else she does to make bad things stop happening.

What a craptastic birthday present, but at least Pea is a good alarm system.

Licks and love,

Poor Mango... sure hope he is much better today. Our thoughts are with him. Seizures just drain them out completely. Hope the new meds help in some way.

Pea is really good. At least he knew how to sound the alarm. I've read somewhere that some dogs know a seizure is coming before it happens in other people or dogs. I think Pea is that kind of dog. It would be good to let Pea be with Mango when he's better.

Phenobarbital was a Godsend for us! I don't think it made Treat lethargic at all, certainly not past the time it took her body to "load up" on the meds. It's good to be aware of the possible side effects, but don't dwell on those. After Treat started on her phenobarb, she really came out of her shell. It was like she'd been walking on eggshells up until that point.

You might want to look at Milk Thistle, which is a natural supplement you can get at health food stores. It is supposed to help cleanse the liver, which can be affected by the medicine. Treat never had a problem, but all dogs are different, and it's good to know.

We have our paws and fingers crossed here that Mango will be feeling better soon!

Our April has been on Phenobarbital for well over a year now. There haven't been any seizures since she started taking it and we don't notice that she's lethargic at all. So hopefully things will get a lot better for Mango once the proper dose is calculated and he gets started on medication.

If it's any consolation, our dog Astro was on Phenobarb for a long time (6-8 years?), and, for him, the side effects were minimal. I hope the same is true for Mango.
