Mango had two very bad seizures today. Fortunately Master was home. He was working in the barn and heard Dexter barking in the house. Master looked out in the driveway, nobody there, but Dexter didn't stop, so Master came inside and Mango was in the grip of the seizure monster.
This means that it was a very long one for Mango. His previous seizures have been less than two minutes but this one was certainly more than five minutes.
Mango had barely gotten up from the first one when another very bad one hit.
The poor guy was quite disoriented for a long time, but Master took good care of him, gave him lots of water, and moved all the furniture out of the way while poor Mango staggered about for over half an hour, bumping into walls.
Mango is resting now and seems fine. We are going to start him on phenobarbital. I had been hoping to avoid that as up until now his seizures were relatively short and infrequent, but given the severity of today's incident and the fact that he had two, the vet thought it wise to start the medication.
I do worry about the side effects. Lethargy. Oh dear. Could Mango get any more lethargic than he already is? More worrisome is the potential for coordination problems. He already struggles to maneuver his large self around, especially on and off the deck. I will be making sure Master or I are by his side for now whenever he goes out lest he take a tumble.
While I am consumed with worry, I am so grateful that Master was home and that Pea sounded the alert. Poor little Pea was banished to the barn as soon as Master realized what was going on. It was pouring rain and he needed to be in a safe place.
Of course the advice is to continue with life as usual. I know I will get back to that but for tonight I am just going to stay close to the big guy. He is exhausted, but otherwise fine.
As usual, all good thoughts and words of wisdom are appreciated.
