PSA from Mango Momma

Mango momma taking over the blog briefly to share a review of my recently purchased dog ear thermometer. I had previously used the classic rectal thermometer which has plenty of drawbacks as I'm sure you're aware. Not the least of which is that with Mango if you don't maintain a tight grip, you could lose the darn thing (almost happened for sure).

Being able to take your dog's temperature is very important. Often if a dog is displaying off behavior you might not think it is time to go to the vet, but if you can detect a fever then you will know that your pet is really sick.

I poked around on Amazon and finally selected the Pet Temp ear thermometer

It worked great! Very easy to use and the dogs don't mind it at all. Of course they are both used to having their ears handled and cleaned. One note is that this does not seem suited to smallish dogs. The probe is a bit large.

I made a little demo movie so you can see how easy it is to use. The movie is kind of long, but Mango and Dexter are in it, so that should help with the entertainment value. Watch it below or click here.

I have never yet been subjected to any kind of thermometer. Did I understand right? That there is a type that gets put in one's rear end? Ouch! The ear probe I could handle no probs. I sure know which type I would want Gail to use ...

#1 bought one too and we took it to Dr. C so she could test it, and at the same time, use a rectal one, to see how they compared. She though the ear thermometer performed really well on me, but less well on the Chans.

Tommy

hehehe... Although IT has never been used on ME.. yet... My mom has a therm. that is the type used on Horses... it has a little hole thingy on the Handle End.. that you tie a String to... beclaws Horses are FAMOUS for "Sucking Them IN".
Butt I guess the Ear would be much better than the REAR, fur sure.

Thanks for the info, I think I will get one (and if they make one for cats pick up one for them too). After Fenris got his yearly vaccines he spiked a temperature but since I didn't have a thermometer I couldn't tell the vet tech how high, over the phone. It had to have been fairly high as he was burning up to the touch. ~Alasandra

What a good idea. Will have to pick one up also. Thanks for the review!

That's the same one our vet uses! No problem for us boys. Ruby, on the other hand, had to be sedated the other day just so the vet could do a complete physical! Sheesh. Long a go we had a kitteh sister who would purr during anal temp-taking. Weirdo...

Have a good weekend, boys!

Great review!! Wonder if I could find one in Bilbo size (8 lbs). Although it looks like I could use it on Dory/Jacob (20-25 lbs)!!

Thanks for sharing!!

Mango Momma,
You should be doing infomercials on the TV! That was great and we will have to get one for ourselves. Our ears are quite big and we like having them handled so it should work really well for us. And it is much better than having a thermometer poked in rude places.

What a great thing! I'm certain Mabel would think I'm murdering her when she heard the beep...she's a pill!

We have a human version - cost about $60, but with the husband's frequent sickies, it was well worth the $$. I confess, I've never taken the dogs' temperatures, but now that you mention it, it's probably a handy thing to have in my Dog Medicine Cabinet. I'll have to go check it out. I'm impressed that neither Dexter nor Mango was freaked out by the beeping (the girls have their ears handled all the time, so I'm not worried about using an ear thermometer on her). Very nice infomercial, MangoMomma!

Good price, too! I think I'll bite the bullet and get one. (You should tell Amazon, so you get a commission! *grin*)

Our Mom has one of those, but she said to tell you that it doesn't work very well on dogs with hairy ear canals. Porties have a lot of hair in their ears to protect them from cold water when swimming.

We may just have to invest in one of those. Mom has them for the human pups' ears too. Thanks for the PSA and the great demonstration. With the heat here, we think we might blow up that weapon with our temps:) BOL

I've wondered about these - we use the rectal type at the clinic and taking a temp always goes over like a fart in church...

Mango, we hope your agent negotiated a good commission for that PSA that is going to move hundreds of units for the mfg.! Mama has been curious about those, and we sure prefer them, so we're glad to have a reliable review. Thanks!

now that sure is clever - definitely a need to have item! Oh how I know that selective ( or slow) mastiff obediance, making it easier just doing it - or getting over there - yourself... ;)

Great tip and PSA. Thank you for sharing. I am going to get one of those and put it right in our first aid kit!

That looks great. I like stuff in my ears. I usually take Arrow's temperature by nose.

THank you Mango Momma! Excellent information! I was worried about Mouse but this would be too much for a 5 lb dog.

Wow, your Mom got a reading almost instantly. That's great. It sure beats the traditional way.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I knew you could loose a THER MOMMA TER in a horse...didn't know a Mastiff bum could inhale it....

A nice tidbit for my nursing student notebook...
